“He Knows the Feeling”

Ryan Isfeld

John 19:16-18

John 19:28-30 Later, knowing that everything had now been finished, and so that Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, “I am thirsty.” 29 A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips. 30 When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

Fulfillment of Psalm 22:15:My mouth is dried up like a piece of broken clay, and my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth; you lay me in the dust of death.

HE KNOWS THE FEELING

Our God knows the feeling of the human condition.

Phil. 2:5-9

Jesus put aside the power of DIVINITY to take on the pain of HUMANITY

He decided to get off the throne for a minute, to get hung up on a cross. He decided to take the crown of glory off his head, to put on a crown of thorns. He decided to lay the scepter down for a minute, to get pierced with a spear instead. He decided to take a break from being worshiped by angels, to be whipped by soldiers.

1. He knows the feeling of Suffering.

Isaiah 53:2-7

The suffering of the Savior:

JESUS WAS THIRSTY ON THE CROSS, BECAUSE HE DRANK DEEPLY FROM THE CUP OF SUFFERING.

He knows the feeling of Pain.

Hebrews 12:2

He endured the pain of the cross. He leaned into the pain, refusing the wine with myrrh that would have dulled his senses.

He knows the feeling of Weakness.

He knows the feeling of Anxiety.

He knows the feeling of Grief.

He knows the feeling of Being Misunderstood.

He knows the feeling of Rejection.

We will be rejected by the world too, let it be for the right reasons.

He knows the feeling of Betrayal.

2. He knows the feeling of The Struggle.

Jesus knows the feeling of battling temptation, it’s a day to day battle.

Hebrews 4:15-16: For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin.

Temptation is not just to do wrong but also to do things Our Way.

If you’re looking for a short cut, you’re going to get cut short.

He can make Us Right because He remained Righteous.

3. He knows how THEY FEEL.

There are people we just won’t be able to understand. Jesus understands them.

You might not GET THEM, but You have to LOVE THEM

4. He knows HOW YOU FEEL

He sees you in your situation. There’s something about Jesus. He’s not a God that turns his back on our pain. He’s not a God that can’t relate to our struggles. He’s not a God that punishes or abandons his kids.He showed us on the cross that He is a God that leans into our pain. He showed us with his tears that he weeps with those who weep.He showed us with his life that he meets us in our broken places. He showed us with his blood that he loves us more than we can know. He knows the feeling of pain, that’s why he did something about it.

Exodus 3:7-8 ESV

God Sees, God Hears, God Knows, and God is Working on it.

God is not the author of your pain, But He will REWRITE it for good if you let him.

5. He knows the FEELING that you are trying to FILL

John 4:13-14

John 6:37-38

Because Jesus was THIRSTY on the cross, all of our THIRST can be Quenched.

He cares for me.

1 Peter 5:7 Cast all your anxiety on him, because he cares for you.

Imagine: Jesus hands you a sweater, as you walk down the path of life. Your sweater gets torn. Obstacles, trips, bumps, rocks, thorns. Near the end, you look back and you see that Jesus was with you every step of the way, and he picked up every thread that fell, and along with pieces of his own, he patched a brand new sweater.

He will take everything that life threw your way, and make something beautiful out of it.

No one ever cared for me like Jesus.
