Sermon Notes: 2/11/24

"Inescapable Love" Pastor Albert Almore

ONE DAY as Jesus was preaching on the shore of the Sea of Galilee, great crowds pressed in on him to listen to the word of God.“

‭‭Luke‬ ‭5‬:‭1‬ ‭NLT‬‬

”He noticed two empty boats at the water’s edge, for the fishermen had left them and were washing their nets.“

‭‭Luke‬ ‭5‬:‭2‬ ‭NLT‬‬

”Stepping into one of the boats, Jesus asked Simon, its owner, to push it out into the water. So he sat in the boat and taught the crowds from there.“

‭‭Luke‬ ‭5‬:‭3‬ ‭NLT‬‬

”When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Now go out where it is deeper, and let down your nets to catch some fish.”“

‭‭Luke‬ ‭5‬:‭4‬ ‭NLT‬‬

”“Master,” Simon replied, “we worked hard all last night and didn’t catch a thing. But if you say so, I’ll let the nets down again.”“

‭‭Luke‬ ‭5‬:‭5‬ ‭NLT‬‬

”And this time their nets were so full of fish they began to tear! A shout for help brought their partners in the other boat, and soon both boats were filled with fish and on the verge of sinking.“

‭‭Luke‬ ‭5‬:‭6‬-‭7‬ ‭NLT‬‬

”When Simon Peter realized what had happened, he fell to his knees before Jesus and said, “Oh, Lord, please leave me—I’m such a sinful man.”“

‭‭Luke‬ ‭5‬:‭8‬ ‭NLT‬‬

”For he was awestruck by the number of fish they had caught, as were the others with him.“

‭‭Luke‬ ‭5‬:‭9‬ ‭NLT‬‬

”His partners, James and John, the sons of Zebedee, were also amazed. Jesus replied to Simon, “Don’t be afraid! From now on you’ll be fishing for people!”“

‭‭Luke‬ ‭5‬:‭10‬ ‭NLT‬‬

”And as soon as they landed, they left everything and followed Jesus.“

‭‭Luke‬ ‭5‬:‭11‬ ‭NLT‬‬

I want to preach a message this morning called,

INESCAPABLE LOVE

So the story tells us that it was now day time and Jesus had just arrived to preached. Peter had been working hard all night long, AND STILL CAUGHT NOTHING! So Peter was washing his nets to go home. After working all night, with it now being day, I can’t but help think to myself…

 WHAT MADE PETER STAY?

After such a long dreadful night of catching NOTHING, what made Peter stay for the church service? I would’ve been like yea bro, you can use the boat, the keys are in it I’m going home. Leave the key under the tackle box when you’re done or something. WHAT MADE PETER STAY?

📝 I believe that the thing that caused Peter TO STAY, is the thing that caused Jesus TO CALL.

Peter stayed. Listened to the message. After the message, Jesus asked him to try it again. Peter tried it again and caught the catch of a lifetime. His response to Jesus AFTER ALL OF THIS in Luke 5:8 was,

”When Simon Peter realized what had happened, he fell to his knees before Jesus and said, “Oh, LORD, PLEASE LEAVE ME—I’M SUCH A SINFUL MAN.”“

‭‭Luke‬ ‭5‬:‭8‬ ‭NLT‬‬

This is funny to me because all throughout the scriptures, just like in Hebrews 13:5, we’re told,

”…For He Himself has said, “I WILL NEVER LEAVE YOU nor forsake you.”“

‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭13‬:‭5‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

Psalm 46:1 says,

”God is our refuge and strength, an EVER-PRESENT help in trouble.“

‭‭Psalms‬ ‭46‬:‭1‬ ‭NIV‬‬

📝 HOW CAN THE ONE WHO’S EVER PRESENT, EVER LEAVE

Another translation says Luke 5:8 like this…

When Simon Peter saw this happen, he knelt down in front of Jesus and said, "LORD, DON’T COME NEAR ME! I am a sinner."

Luke 5:8 CEV

Peter, THAT’S NOT HOW JESUS WORKS! YOU CAN’T ESCAPE HIS LOVE!

Peter the very reason why you’re telling Jesus NOT TO COME NEAR, IS THE VERY REASON WHY JESUS CAME NEAR. But what about you…

ARE YOU PUSHING JESUS AWAY, FOR THE VERY REASON HE CAME NEAR?

You’ll be amazed at how many people are pushing Jesus away and not stepping into their God given purpose and their God given calling for responses just like Peter gave us today. Not understanding when Galatians‬ ‭1‬:‭4‬ says,

”Jesus gave his life FOR OUR SINS, just as God our Father planned, in order TO RESCUE US from this evil world in which we live.“

‭‭Galatians‬ ‭1‬:‭4‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Jesus came NEAR for our sins, so that we wouldn’t have to live FAR from God because of our sins.

”“Christ Jesus came into the world TO SAVE SINNERS.” This saying is true, and it can be trusted. I was the worst sinner of all!“

‭‭1 Timothy‬ ‭1‬:‭15‬ ‭CEV‬‬

📝 "But since I was worse than anyone else, God had mercy on me and let me be an example of THEENDLESS PATIENCE OF CHRIST JESUS. He did this so that others would put their faith in Christ and have eternal life.“

‭‭1 Timothy‬ ‭1‬:‭16‬ ‭CEV‬‬

Peter, you got it wrong…

📝 Jesus’s endless patience doesn’t END because of our sins. That’s where it BEGINS.

LORD, DON’T COME NEAR ME! I am a sinner…

📝 • He knows but He SEES.

Maybe the question isn’t so much as what made Peter STAY, as much it is, what did Jesus SEE?

What did Jesus see in Peter when he first laid eyes on him, that Peter didn’t see in himself? What did Jesus see in Peter while he was preaching, that Peter was yet to see in himself? What does Jesus see in this moment, that you’re yet to see in yourself?

I believe that when Jesus looked at Peter, Jesus saw the tenacity to rise again. I believe that when Jesus looked at Peter, Jesus saw the tenacity to believe again. I believe that when Jesus looked at Peter, Jesus saw the tenacity to try again in the face of nothing, in the face of coming up short.

Peter had the tenacity to MOVE ON JESU’S WORD, over his PREVIOUS EXPERIENCES.

Luke‬ ‭5‬:‭5‬

”“Master,” Simon replied, “we worked hard ALL LAST NIGHT and didn’t catch a thing. But if you say so, I’LL LET THE NETS DOWN AGAIN.”

‭‭Luke‬ ‭5‬:‭5‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Peter teaches us in this moment…

📝 It doesn’t matter how many times you’ve came up short. EMPTY NETS don’t have the last say so when Jesus Christ is in your boat!

Peter had the faith, willing to look silly and to come up short in front of on going watchers, other partners who were in the water, AND THAT’S WHAT JESUS SAW!

In this very moment, Jesus is seeing more inside of you, than you’re seeing in yourself. And that implies for everyone listening & watching, no matter where you are in your journey!

📝 Jesus knows about your sins, but He sees your CALLING. Jesus knows about your past, but He sees your FUTURE. Jesus knows about your last ending, but He sees your NEW BEGINNING. That’s my Jesus! That’s His inexscapable love!

Jesus is saying in this moment….

📝 You bring forth the FAITH, and I’ll bring forth the FORGIVENESS. You bring forth the WILLINGNESS, I’ll bring forth the WORK.

LORD, DON’T COME NEAR ME! I am a sinner…

📝 • He knows but He CALLS.

One day I was at my parents house and jokingly said, "Well gotta run. I have to go do my honey do list for Logan and grab her coffee, and her make up…” Without skipping a beat my mom said, "You knew what you were getting before you got her, so don’t act surprised! The same Goes for God…

When it comes to you…There were no surprises. There were no secrets. There were no, "Huh! I never saw that coming!” Or, "Oh wow! I never believed that they would ever do that!” He knows, yet He still calls! Psalms‬ ‭139‬:‭15‬-‭16‬…

MY FRAME WAS NOT HIDDEN FROM YOU when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. YOUR EYES SAW MY UNFORMED BODY

‭‭Psalms‬ ‭139‬:‭15‬-‭16‬ ‭NIV‬‬

He SAW my unformed body—PAST TENSE. He SEES my unformed ways—PRESENT TENSE. He knew, He knows, but He still calls! He knew, He knows, but He still loves!

He saw our sins. He saw us unfit. He saw us undone, and still said yes. He saw us undone and still said, "I do!” He saw us undone and stiIl said, "I’ll give will them my name, my image, my likeness.”

My mom said, "You knew what you were getting before you got her, so don’t act surprised!

📝 Jesus knew what He was getting before He got me, and HE STILL WANTED ME.

”AND I AM CONVINCED THAT NOTHING CAN EVER SEPARATE US FROM GOD’S LOVE. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love.“

‭‭Romans‬ ‭8‬:‭38‬ ‭NLT‬‬

”No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, NOTHING in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.“

‭‭Romans‬ ‭8‬:‭39‬ ‭NLT‬‬

📝 Nothing escapes HIS EYES, yet no one escapes HIS LOVE.

📝 • He knows but he LONGS.

”Father, I DESIRE that they also, whom You have given to Me [as Your gift to Me], MAY BE WITH ME WHERE I AM, so that they may see My glory which You have given Me, because You loved Me before the foundation of the world.“

‭‭John‬ ‭17‬:‭24‬ ‭AMP‬‬

”And as soon as they landed, THEY LEFT EVERYTHING and followed Jesus.“

‭‭Luke‬ ‭5‬:‭11‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Peter out of everything, what was the hardest thing that you had to leave behind to follow Jesus?

"THE GREATEST THING THAT I HAD TO LEAVE BEHIND, WAS MY PRECONCEIVED NOTION OF MYSELF." -Peter

LORD, DON’T COME NEAR ME! I am a sinner.

WHAT ABOUT YOU?

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO LEAVE BEHIND?

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO LEAVE BEHIND SO THAT YOU CAN WHOLEHEARTEDLY FOLLOW JESUS?

There’s 2 questions that have been on my mind that I can’t shake that I want to bring to the table to start our time together. John 18:37 reads, ”Pilate therefore said to Him, “Are You a king then?” J
